Student Stories: Past Award Recipients
Becky Carvin
Verona Area High School
2001 Scholarship Recipient
It's hard to believe that it's been six years since I received the GSAFE scholarship!
After high school I went to Beloit College where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Geology. During college I worked several jobs including: Residential Assistant, Career Advisor, and Deli Sandwich Maker. Between college and graduate school I worked five different jobs in one year. Among those jobs were Teacher's Aid, Research Assistant, and Boatie at Rutabaga. I'm currently working on my Masters in Water Resources Management at the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at UW-Madison, and working part time as a Hydrologic Technician at the US Geologic Survey.
The experience I gained as a GSA leader in high school has given me the confidence to work for excellence in all areas of my life. I look back on high school and see it as a time of challenge and triumph. GSA friends, teachers and community organizers were always a source of support, without which high school would have been lonelier and more difficult. Thank you GSA for Safe Schools for helping me become the person I am today.
