Student Stories: Past Award Recipients

1998 Scholarship Recipient
After high school, I attended the University of WI-Madison and earned a B.A. in Linguistics (insert some
snickers here, along with some disapproving head-shakes from my parents). I was heavily involved with
the political activities on campus my freshman year, and after the '98 elections I took a hiatus from
my activist life to focus on my studies, and to catch up on my sleep.
After graduating, I took a full-time management position at the Gap on State Street, and there I
stayed for five years. In the fall of 2005, I began volunteering with Action Wisconsin (now Fair
Wisconsin), and was hired by the campaign as a field organizer in August 2006; my activist hiatus was
officially over.
After the campaign was over (boo! hiss!), I began a six-month apprenticeship with Gay Straight Alliance for Safe Schools through the Wisconsin Apprentice Organizers Project. In April, the gods of the nonprofit pantheon smiled down on me, and GSAFE was able to offer me a position as Program Assistant for the next fourteen months. So here I am.
