Student Stories: Past Award Recipients
Tyler Stevermer Sun Prairie High School 2004 Scholarship Recipient
I am entering my senior year at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, studying interior design and architectural history in the College of Design. I have been very involved in the University by working for their museum and as a writer for a large, design-based research project. The University has provided me with many opportunities, such as two summer sessions abroad in Paris and in Amsterdam. These trips unleashed a desire for travel. I am currently making plans for a backpacking trip around Eastern Europe in June and July with my good friend Emily.
Outside of school I have been getting very involved in the thriving art and design community of Minneapolis. This year I beat out graduating design students for an internship within a popular, commercial-based interior design firm. I have also started photographing for a local street fashion website that is part of a global network created to encourage and inspire personal fashion innovation.
GSA for Safe Schools definitely played a key role in creating who I am today. GSAFE taught me to be confident in myself while showing me that I can create change. These are lessons that reach far beyond issues of gender and sexuality, and have entered into every aspect of my life. GSAFE has shaped who I have become.
